15. THE SMS

Laura and her ex-husband got up early to prepare Nina's search plan. They consulted a map and decided that they would start searching for the first coastal town of any importance, north of the capital, where they stopped.

“If they travel by bus, they must be in a locality where they have a stop. We will start by informing ourselves of all the buses that go north and south, because I do not think they will stray from the towns on the coast. Maybe we will find someone who has seen them get on the bus and guide us in which direction to look.”

Laura packed her luggage with all her belongings and the ones that Nina had left because she believed that they would not return to that apartment. Picking up Nina's bra, she felt guilty again. Her daughter had become a woman without realizing it and had neglected her personal relationship with her. She always considered her a baby-girl, who could not be trusted with certain things because she would not understand them. But now she realized that she was the one who didn't understand them, like innocence, loyalty, or maternal affection. She had not only been a careless mother but also a stupid one, unable to distinguish what is right and what is wrong.

They went back to the restaurant for breakfast and saw the new boy in charge of the hammocks.

“Good morning,” She greeted the boy.

“Good morning, ma'am,” he replied, approaching the restaurant terrace. “I'm glad to see you because after you left, I remembered that Nano told me he intended to meet some of his colleagues in one of the northern towns, but he didn't know which one they might be in.”

“Thanks, that will be of grand help to us.”

The boy returned to his work at the beach bar, and Laura discussed the new information with her ex-husband.

“Now, we know where we have to look!”

Suddenly, an SMS tone sounded, and Laura's heart skipped a beat because something told her it would have to do with her daughter. She did not expect messages from anyone, especially in the morning. She searched nervously for the cell phone she had put in her messy bag with other personal items, and after an agonizing search, she could finally read Nina's message. Her ex-husband also could not hide his anxiety to know the content of that unexpected message. Laura read it and dropped onto the chair as if she had lost the strength to stand upright.

“It's Nina, “exclaimed. “She says, don't worry about her because she's fine!”

“Doesn't it say where it is?”

“No, I guess she doesn't want me to know! Thank you, Nina, for having compassion for your mother! At least now I know that nothing has happened to them that we have to regret! What do you think we should do?” She asked her ex-husband.

“I'm not going back without knowing where she is and having been able to talk to her.”

“Nina doesn't know you're here. She loves you and will listen to you.”

“Leave me the mobile, I will send her an answer.”

“But what will we do if she comes. She will no longer want to live with me!”

“Laura, Nina will come back to you if I ask her.”

“But how will we live? I will quit my job!”

“Am I not her father? I will keep you!”

“I don't deserve you to do that for me; you don't know what my life has been in these last ten years. If you knew, you would hate me!”

“Laura, now we have to think about Nina and her future. Then we will have time to take care of ourselves. I don't want to know anything about what you've done all these years, now that's not important.”

“But, I feel guilty about our divorce!”

“No, we are both guilty. I married you because you were a happy and fun woman; what right did I have to make your life bitter with my worries? I caused our separation ... But now is not the time to confess our mistakes, because Nina is the innocent victim. She needs to regain confidence in us; the rest is not essential.

“And how will we get she?”

“I don't know, but I will send her a message and beg her to let me see and talk to her.”

“Okay, take the cell phone and send her that message. May God, hear you!”

The ex-husband wrote his reply:

«My dear Nina, I am your father who sends you this message, and I beg you to allow me to see you talk about the reasons that have led you to separate from your mother. You know I love you, and I don't want to see you suffer. Will you do it for me?”

He read the message to Laura and sent it.

“Do you think she will see you?”

“I hope so, she has no reason to refuse
