38. THE RETIREMENT

As soon as the two women had been able to fall asleep for four hours, Nina's cell phone rang.

“Nina, where have you been? I've searched all over town for you!”

“What's up, Marc? I have only slept for four hours, and I am exhausted... can't wait for whatever?”

“The managing director wants to talk to you...”

“The managing director? Have they not already terminated my contract?”

“No, and that's what he wants to talk to you about. I'll come to pick you up in half an hour.”

“Why do you all give me half an hour to shower and get dressed? Okay, Marc, but you will pick up two passengers because I want you to meet Lali ... Lali Boon, your next promotion!”

“I knew it, I knew you were Nina!”

“Yes, Lali, but now is not the time for talks, we have to be ready in 30 minutes because you are going to meet your future agent, and I can assure you that soon you will be able to help your parents!”

An hour later, Nina was in the managing director and Lali's luxurious office in Marc's.

“Good morning, Nina, You have terrible dark circles.” the managing director observed. “Have you had a bad night? I also suffer from insomnia. No one knows how long sleepless nights are! But I have not made you come to talk about me, but about you. Your father wants to make you a good lawyer, and he probably will, but at Nina's expense. It is not my intention to interfere between father and daughter. Still, I have been in this business long enough to recognize the artist in a person, and the disastrous results when they are denied the opportunity to express their art.” the managing director was silent for a moment. “In a week, you will have the great opportunity that hundreds of good artists will never have, to show others, but above all yourself, that you cannot deprive birds of song or flowers or colors of their art to artists. You know better than anyone what your songs mean to you. Surely each one will bring you those pleasant moments from when you composed them. And that is the happiness that you will transmit to the thousands of young people who will probably come to your call, in those posters that you so dislike,” He paused again and continued in a more conciliatory tone. “I have agreed with your father that we will terminate your contract after your performance, and you can decide between Art or Law. Will you sing, Nina?”

Nina was deeply impressed and could only confirm it with a slight nod.

“Thanks, girl! Sometimes we old people must lower our pride as wise and expert and learn from the young's honesty and innocence. Nina, I have a cozy bungalow in the Sierra that is unoccupied in the summer. We only used it during the ski season, and I thought it would be the ideal place to spend the days until the concert without the stress of the phone, television, or the Internet. What do you think about my idea?”

“I think it's great, but it would seem even better if my friend and colleague, Lali Boon, accompanied me.

“Lali Boon... Lali Boon? I don't know any singer with that interesting name.”

Well, if you find it interesting and want to meet her, she is here, in Marc's office.”

The director-manager went to the intercom and called his secretary.

“Call Marc to come to my office with his guest, Lali Boon.”

“I like the name, hopefully, the rest too.”

“You will like it!”

A few moments later, Marc entered, followed by a nervous and excited Lali.

The director-manager went directly to Lali and extended his hand intending to greet her. Then addressing Marc, he asks him:

“Well, Marc, what do you have to tell us about this young lady.”

“That it is sensational!”

The director-manager looked at Lali thoughtfully for a few moments, and finally exclaimed:

“Okay, we will allow her to assert his name. Let her open for the Nina concert!”

The excited Lali couldn't help but shout with joy. She apologized and hugged Nina.

“Thanks, Nina. My parents will be proud of the escaped daughter!”

“That sounds familiar to me because I think I heard it years ago and elsewhere! You were just in the right place at the right time! We call that destiny!”
