24. THE FAME

Four years after her parents' reconciliation, Nina was in her third year at the Faculty of Law, obeying her parents' wishes, who moved into a quiet residential area on the periphery. Nina lived in the city, in a small apartment well connected to the University, and, besides a generous monthly allowance, she had a small utility vehicle from an Italian brand, a gift from her father for having followed her professional recommendations and chosen her own career.

After she was in the third year of her law degree, Nina once again felt the call of her musical vocation and had convinced her father to allow her a year off, during which she set out to record a demo with the songs she composed together with Nano and send them to various record labels.

She went to her old music school to find a musician who wanted to help her, and by her surprise, she met a transfigured Marc. Thanks to his neighborhood in the coastal town with a major record label director, he got assistant to the artistic director. The position that combined with that of a representative of some musicians hired by the record company.

She waited in the compact room reserved for visitors so that the director was free to express her wish. She was so absorbed in her request, and in which musicians I would need them, that she did not notice Marc's entry into the same room until she heard her name.

“Nina?”

The unexpected presence of the cause of her nightmares uneasy her, but his transfiguration told that he was not the same Marc, who knew that hectic summer in the small coastal town and reacted favorably.

“Marc?“

“The same! But what has become of your life in recent years? You disappeared from town, leaving us all with honey in our mouths! And do you have any idea what happened to the guitarist? Because he also disappeared!”

“It's a lengthy story, I'd rather not talk about it ... But what happened to yours? I have to confess ... you are very changed. I think if I had met you on the street, I would not have recognized you!”

“For better or for wors?”

“I can't guess, but I'd say for the better.”

“Thanks, Nina. However, you are the same as ... well; you know ... that night ...”

Nina blushed because the memory of what happened then was still alive in her imagination. Marc felt that he should apologize for what happened because he still felt guilty for his subsequent conduct.

“It was teenage stuff! In those days, we were all crazy. We did not understand what was right or wrong. We just knew what fun was right and what was boring was wrong. That was how simple our world was! I have always felt guilty about what happened that night ... I was scared and avoided you not to meet you and know that you were pregnant. That idea horrified me!”

“Forget it, Marc! You don't have to feel guilty, and you can rest easy because there was no pregnancy!”

“Then, friends?”

“Sure, friends!”

And they put the palm of their hands together, in a simple gesture of the recovered friendship.

“Now that we are friends again, may I ask you what has become of your precious songs? Didn't you and Nano form a duo? You were both great!”

Nina felt violent because now that she had met young Marc, she was ashamed of her refusal to inform him of her frustrated pregnancy.

“Marc, what happened next is hard for me to tell. I think I also have to apologize for something.”

“Nina, I have an idea. Why don't we look for a quiet place where we can have a beer and tell me everything that happened to you afterward? If you are waiting to interview the principal, I think it will take her a while because she meets with the teachers. We'll have time to have those beers before she's free.”

Nina believed that telling him what had happened would help calm her bad conscience, so she agreed to Marc's proposal.

It was difficult to find the right place, but at last, they found a well-known café, apparently frequented by writers, poets, and people of letters from the entire city.

They settled at one of the more remote tables, ordered two beers, and Marc proposed a biblical toast.

“For the joyful reunion of two repentant sinners.”

Nina also tasted what seemed like a good definition of herself.

“You can start your story whenever you want because I'm sure it will be exciting.”
