Sumario

40. THE PRELIMINARIES

The appointed day of the concert arrived. From the early hours of a bright and fresh morning, with the sunrise still shining on the floors, the two women awaited the car, which had to transport them to the stadium where a large stage profusely illuminated had been installed. The weather seemed to collaborate in the event's success. Forecasts announced summer storms for the next day. Upon arriving at the stadium, Marc, named director and coordinator of that outstanding event, received them.

“Good morning, I suppose you will come relaxed from your retreat in the mountains.”

“Yes, Marc, I wish I could hold the concert up there.”

Nina and Lali hurried up to the enormous stage, while light and sound technicians tested the installations.

“Isn't it a fairy tale that yesterday was I little less than sleeping in a gutter, and today I am on the stage of the most popular summer concert? Can I be happier?” Lali strode across the wide floorboard as if rehearsing the movements of his performance. But Nina did not share her enthusiasm and tried to imagine that immense space full of hundreds of young people who were there only to see and hear her, the future fourth-year law student! The fear that she would make a mistake and be booed by hundreds, or perhaps thousands of attendees, also haunted her. As the concert hour approached, his fear and nervousness increased.

By mid-afternoon, all the groups' sound equipment would act as the opening act was already installed and checked. Some saxophonists rehearsed scales; They tuned the guitars and tested the keyboards. The lighting and special effects technicians took advantage of the fact that the daylight was already declining and more visible.

Marc was deeply concerned about Nina's mood, which seemed to worsen as the concert time approached.

“Nina, I am worried about your condition...”

“Don't be worried, Marc, I will go to that stage when it is my turn!”

“If you need anything...”

“Don't worry, Marc, I'm fine, just a little nervous. And don't make me more nervous about your care!”

“Okay, sorry, but you must remember I am responsible for everything going well!”

Half an hour before the concert, the director-manager arrived, who seemed satisfied because half the capacity was already occupied. Outside the venue, there were long lines at the makeshift ticket offices.

“How's it going, Marc; How is Nina?”

“She says it's okay, but I don't think so. If you want to see her, she is with Lali in the caravan-dressing room, who tries to cheer her up.”

“No, it would make her even more nervous. I know what happens to that young woman: When I saw her five years ago at the piano-bar on the coast, I had the feeling that they formed an indissoluble duo, and now it is confirmed, so I doubted if she would be the same alone. To interpret those songs composed between the two, they would have to be together again. She must believe that she betrays her friend if she succeeds alone. I have called London and have been informed that Nano is here on a tour of performances across the country. We have finally located him in the coastal town where he met Nina, no doubt he expected to meet her there, and immediately set off. If the flight isn't delayed, he can be here in an hour. My driver is already at the airport. God willing, it will be on time!”
