27. THE RECORDING

The days that followed their first meeting in Marc's studio were of enormous intensity, and they worked until late in the morning when something went wrong. Marc put together a guitarist and a violinist, and he himself interpreted the piano arrangements or did percussion with bongos when the theme required it. Sometimes, when a choir was necessary, Marc had obtained the disinterested collaboration of a trio of colored singers, very popular in all the Jazz venues in the city, and which he represented.

Three months after that exhaustive work, Marc presented the demo to his artistic director, who, to his surprise, raised many objections and did not seem to approve.

“But who is this, Nina?”

“What does it matter who she is, what matters is her songs! Doesn't that sound good to you?”

“It is not enough with that; she has to have some attraction, something that engages the public!”

“She has it, I assure you!”

“Hey, Marc, she won't be one of your last lovers!”

“Why not interview her? So you will see for yourself!”

Before the skeptical artistic director answered him, the managing director, who had provided Marc's job, entered the office.

“Ah, young Marc!” And turning to the artistic director, he asks him: “How is the work of young Marc doing? Is his salary earned?”

“I think so. He's been very active lately!”

“And what is he involved in?”

“He has brought us an exclusive, a young singer-songwriter who he claims is highly talented.”

“You already know her,” Marc intervened, “you saw her perform at the piano-bar where you have to have your summer residence ...”

“Nina..., Nina...? Ah yes, I remember it! But wasn't she a duet with such a Nano? They didn't seem very interested in recording, because they didn't keep the appointment I gave them. And do you think alone will be interesting?”

“That's what I was telling him,” the artistic director intervened-, “but he insists that the girl promises.”

The managing director looked at the spectator for a few moments and asked him.

“Are you sure, son?”

“Totally sure!”

“Okay, we will give young Marc a chance. If she succeeds, you will have your promotion, but if she fails, forget about your promotion for the next two years. Go to a recording.”
