26 THE DEMO

Marc had installed a simple recording studio in his apartment, where they recorded his represented musicians' demos to present them to the record company.

“So,” Marc said, without hiding his joy at Nina's acceptance, “prepare the scores because we will record a demo in the studio I have in my apartment. It is not very good, but it will do. What musicians do you need? But we better see the scores together and decide on the arrangements that suit them”.

“Nano also wrote the arrangements; we just need a guitarist and a violinist.” Nina felt nostalgia for her missing friend, and she thought recording the songs in her absence was like betrayal, but she couldn't deny that opportunity.

They stayed the next day when Marc finished his work at the record company, to prepare the recording.

“I'll order two pizzas and have dinner together. Do you like pizzas?”

“Sure! Who doesn't like pizzas?”

“Then agreed. You no longer need to go to the academy, because from today I am your agent, and they will accept you on the record label, and you will have great success with your songs.”

Nina could not hide her satisfaction at that optimistic vision, but she missed Nano's absence once again.

“Too bad, my friend Nano is not on the recording! He knew the arrangements that each song needed ... I will miss him!”

“Yes, I understand, but you have to accept it: if he hasn't contacted you all this time, it's because he no longer has an interest in maintaining your friendship.”

As agreed, Nina and Marc met at Marc's apartment. Nina carried all the scores for their songs, with Nano's notes for the arrangements. Marc sat at the piano in the studio and performed Nina's songs, and she hummed their lyrics.

“Fantastic!” Exclaimed Marc, once again convinced of his foreseeable success, “and Nano has left enough notes to make the arrangements, it will be an easy job.”

Nina put the sheet music back in her backpack while Marc made a call to order the pizzas. While they waited for them, returned to the piano and, with a slower tempo, tried to interpret one of Nina's songs that he had memorized, while she leafed through a musical magazine sitting in the only armchair in the study.

Marc stopped his improvisation and surprised Nina with a question:

“Nina, can I ask you a personal question?”

“But, I will answer you depending on how personal.”

“Were you in love with Nano?”

The question took Nina by surprise because she never knew how she felt about him. On some occasions, she thought she was in love, but on others, she only felt a deep admiration for the musician and a great affection for the person, but that could not be love.

“I don't know, Marc! How do you know if you are in love or not ..?”

“I think it's straightforward: when you can't get it out of your head, and you only live when you're by your side.”

“Very romantic! I don't know; I guess I wasn't in love with him, although I missed him:”

The sound of the doorbell interrupted that emotional conversation. Nina was relieved because she didn't know what Marc's intention might be with that interrogation.

“The pizzas!”
